Penn's Nayee, Van Hoveln hope to make history at IHSAA cross country state finals
MISHAWAKA — During the summer, Penn girls cross country head coach Michael Clements allows runners from Discovery, Schmucker and Grissom Middle Schools to run with the Kingsmen’s high school team. The past few offseasons, those middle schoolers have come to those summer practices a bit starstruck. Senior Lila Van Hoveln and junior Shreya Nayee are the two fastest girls cross country runners in Penn history, and those who aren’t yet even Penn students look up to the duo. Clements said when he told a middle schooler who asked about Nayee and Van Hoveln that the pair each have run a mile in five minutes flat, the aspiring future Kingsmen’s eyes widened in awe. “When you have runners of their caliber, they become generational role models. It’s not just their own teammates; they’re definitely going to have a ripple effect, because some of the bolder personalities in our middle schools have already said, ‘I want to break their records,’” Clements said. “I think both Lila and Shreya would say, ‘We want to have a legacy starting something where the girls kept getting faster and faster.’” More: Penn boys cross country team claims regional championship Nayee and Van Hoveln have been alongside

The boys fell only seven points short. Yet amid the disappointment, the Tigers proved they belonged among the region's elite and will still be represented at Indiana's biggest stage by three outstanding individual qualifiers.
