Boycotting the Byrd: Richmond’s latest victim of cancel culture
When the Byrd Theatre opened in Carytown in 1928, its large marble walls, almost 1,400 seats and enormous crystal chandelier made it a film venue people came to love. Today, the outside of the Byrd shows its age, with a rundown marquee sign that reads “BYRD,” with only the “R” lighting up, and noticeable wear and tear on the building’s exterior. The lines down the block that once illustrated the theatre’s popularity are now gone, most recently because it became embroiled in the country’s culture wars over transgender rights and the Israel-Hamas war.

Biscuit Belly brings biscuits back to 2 Richmond-area spots
Kentucky-based Biscuit Belly is opening two restaurants in former Maple Street Biscuit Company locations in the coming weeks. Why it matters: Richmond will still have plenty of biscuits, as we deserve. State of play: Maple Street parent company Cracker Barrel sold 35 of its roughly 50 locations nationwide to the Kentucky chain in July, and closed the rest. Biscuit Belly — which specializes in scratch-made biscuits, biscuit sandwiches, daily brunch and daytime cocktails — is taking over the Short Pump and Hull Street spaces. The Short Pump Biscuit Belly opens Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 11657 W. Broad St. The Chesterfield location opens Dec. 15 at 14122 Hull Street Road. On the menu: Over-the-top biscuit sandwiches like fried chicken, sausage gravy, pimento cheese and even brisket. Plus: classic biscuits and gravy, biscuit-style French toast and cinnamon-sugar "bonuts" served with bourbon cream cheese frosting. Local menus prices weren't available, but sandwiches are generally $10-$13 in other markets. If you go: Biscuit Belly will be open daily, 7am-2pm. Zoom out: Fast-casual Nashville hot chicken chain Nash & Smashed took over the Huguenot Road Maple Biscuit. It opened last week and is now serving lunch and dinner daily. Peep the menu .
