Virginia Honors D'Angelo With State Flag and Homegrown Tribute
D’Angelo’s legacy returned home to Richmond, Virginia, on Saturday, October 10, as his eldest brother, Luther Archer, and youngest son accepted a Virginia state flag honoring the late artist. The moment unfolded at the Richmond Folk Festival during “Soul of the City: Richmond Celebrates D’Angelo,” a 90-minute tribute held just ahead of the one-year anniversary of the neo-soul pioneer’s death from pancreatic cancer. COMPLEX SHOP: Shop the brands you love, anytime and anywhere. Uncover what's next. Buy. Collect. Obsess. Dr. Sesha Joi Moon, representing Gov. Abigail Spanberger’s office, presented the Archer family with the flag, which had flown at half-staff above the Virginia State Capitol. More than 45 family members gathered for the event as Richmond musicians, mentors, and collaborators took the stage to retrace the gospel, funk, and soul traditions that informed D’Angelo’s work from the beginning. For Luther, the performance’s quality was the point. “Anybody that knows me knows that I do not play about his music,” he told the crowd, according to a video shared by culture reporter Shanique Liz Yates . Richmond is on the front lines of the Sheetz-Wawa rivalry
The Richmond area is on the front lines of the great Sheetz vs. Wawa rivalry. Why it matters: Richmonders have strong feelings about gas station food and, therefore, chains. New data shows just how fierce the competition is in our backyard. State of play: The Pennsylvania-based convenience store giants have expanded their footprints across multiple states, but they share just 21 interstate exits, according to new data from road-trip app Pit Stop shared with Axios. Nearly half — 10 — are in Virginia, including eight along I-95 between Petersburg and Woodbridge, Pit Stop creator Jake Boyles tells Axios. And three of those shared exits are just south of Richmond, around Petersburg and Colonial Heights. What they're saying: "The rivalry's real DMZ starts basically at Richmond's back door," says Boyles. The Sheetz/Wawa divide around Richmond - mapped. Image: Courtesy of Jake Boyles/ Pit Stop Zoom in: Wawa dominates Richmond, with stores off 24 local interstate exits where Sheetz is nowhere to be found. Sheetz has just eight exits without Wawa, per an Axios analysis of Pit Stop's data. Wawa also has roughly 50 locations in the broader Richmond region, about twice as many as Sheetz , per an Axios review of
