VIRGINIA—The Rock Ridge baseball team ran into a hard hitting Cloquet Lumberjacks squad on Monday afternoon.

Cloquet took advantage of their bats and coasted to a 15-5 win over the Wolverines in six innings.

“I am very disappointed with the way we played today,” Wolverines head coach Jamie Lindseth said. “These guys know that they can play the game better out there.”

The Lumberjacks raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning.

Jack Battaglia walked, stole second, and scored when Hudson Snesrud ripped a single.

Luca Gentilini knocked in a run when he hit a single to make it 2-0.

Niko Gentilini then closed out the scoring in the inning with a single of his own.

“Those runs in the first inning hurt us right away,” Lindseth said.

The Wolverines got a pair of runners on base in the bottom of the first when Tate Uhan reached on an error and Owen Hallin walked.

Uhan made it to third on a passed ball and came in to score on a wild pitch to make it 3-1.

The Lumberjacks added to their lead in the top of the second inning, when with two outs Battalia walked and was knocked in when Jackson Peterson hit a double.

Rock Ridge starting pitcher Uhan struck out Snesrud to end the inning.

The Wolverines could not get anything going in the bottom of the second.

Cloquet added another run in the top of the third inning.

Brody Dushkin hit a double down the left field line.

He then came in to score when Niko Gentilini hit an RBI Single and all of a sudden it was a 5-1 Lumberjacks lead.

The Wolverines got a single by Uhan in the home half of the third but could not get anything else in the frame.

Cloquet took advantage of a Wolverines error in the top of the fourth and Battaglia came around to score and the Cloquet lead was up to 6-1.

“You can’t make errors like we did today and expect to stay in the game,” Lindseth said.

Cloquet exploded for six runs in the top of the fifth inning.

Alec Troutwine took over on the mound for the Wolverines in the inning.

The first three Cloquet batters reached.

Grady Knutson then knocked in a pair of runs with a single.

They weren’t done yet.

Wyatt Preteau hit a RBI single and Dushkin knocked in a pair with a single of his own.

The Lumberjacks scored six runs on five hits in the inning and were up 12-2 heading into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Wolverines were able to score three runs in the home half of the fifth inning to keep the game alive.

Uhan walked, Hallin doubled, Tyler Reid singled and Aiden Bird reached on an error.

The Wolverines were able to score three in the inning.

The Lumberjacks scored three runs of their own in the top of the sixth inning when the Wolverines were having trouble throwing strikes.

With the bases loaded and nobody out, Preteau hit a RBI single and another runner scored on a ground out.

The third runner scored on a fielder’s choice and the Lumberjacks lead was back up to 10 runs.

The Wolverines needed to score a run to keep the game going.

Gunnar George walked, but that was all Rock Ridge could do and the Lumberjacks got three straight outs to close out the game.

“Like I said, I know they are a better team than we showed today,” Lindseth said. “You can’t come out and play like this against a good team like Cloquet.”

The Wolverines are back in action this weekend, when they play down in Minneapolis.
