'It's confusing': Restaurant owner fined for child labor violations despite following state law
POLK CITY, Iowa (KCCI) -- One Iowa restaurant owner fined for child labor violations says he didn't know he was doing anything wrong. Jason Schomer, the owner of Buoy's Waterfront Bar and Grill on Saylorville Lake, said he got a call from the U.S. Department of Labor in July 2023. The caller said a former worker of Schomer's made the department aware of the restaurant's hiring of 14- and 15-year-olds.

National Speech and Debate Tournament drawing thousands of people, bringing in millions of dollars to metro
DES MOINES, Iowa — Thousands of students, educators and families are expected to descend on Des Moines starting Sunday for the National Speech and Debate Tournament. It's the first time the National Speech and Debate Association is hosting the event in the metro. The association is headquartered in West Des Moines. Tuition going up at Iowa's public universities, and so is each president's salary
URBANDALE, Iowa — Students at Iowa's three public universities will pay more in tuition this upcoming school year. The Iowa Board of Regents voted Thursday to increase resident undergraduate tuition by 3% at Iowa State University and the University of Iowa. The board also approved a 2% increase in tuition for resident undergraduate students at the University of Northern Iowa.
