The Trinity will have increased flows up to 6,500 CFS release beginning on Christmas Eve
The Trinity will have increased flows up to 6,500 CFS release beginning on Christmas Eve, the flows will be back down to 1,500 CFS on January 2nd. For now, most fish can be found above Douglas City, though the big winter fish will be showing up any day now, so don't disregard fishing lower in the system. Fishing remains superb on nymphs and this is a good time to swing as well. These are super grabby summer run fish, you can get them on HDA Variants, Rubberlegs, Duracells, Olive Hotspots and Copper Johns. Look to put a few Golden Stone nymphs in your bag, Rolling Stones, Mercer's Poxyback Golden Stone, and the Solitude TB Golden Stone will fool these fish just fine. We have had a great season thus far and look forward to the big fish over the coming months. Give us a call if you would like to get on the books with your favorite guide!

Dad, family open Benton Airpark's new restaurant. Latest on The Shack
Willard Martin has been cooking for friends and family for many years. Working in heating and air conditioning, cooking was a hobby. But Martin in the back of his mind always wanted to own and operate a restaurant, and his inner circle would often encourage him to do so. “I wasn’t really looking for places to open a restaurant, this opportunity just popped up, and I was like, I’m just going to jump into it,” Martin recently told me. That opportunity came when his son, Junior Martin, who works at Benton Airpark and wants to be a commercial pilot, told him the airport’s operator was looking for a restaurant to replace The Golden Fang , which closed earlier this year. Enter Flight Deck Grill, which opened Dec. 1. Martin said Camden Air Services, the airport operator, wanted the name of the restaurant to be airport related. “We thought that (Flight Deck Grill) sounded cool,” Martin said. The restaurant is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. seven days week, but Martin expects the hours to change as he gets a better understanding of the busy and slow times. “So far we haven’t had any slow days,” he said. New family-run restaurant Flight Deck Grill takes off at Benton Airpark
REDDING, Calif. — The "Flight Deck Grill" opened at Benton Airpark two weeks ago, marking a dream come true for Will Martin, who serves as the chief cook and bottle washer. "I haven't got to a spot yet where I can hire yet, but I know, when we get busy, I'm going to have to actually hire somebody 'cause my kids can only be here when they're not at school," Martin said. "It's pretty easy on the weekends to have them here."

The fishing has been solid for most groups
With steady flows from Lewiston and dropping tributaries, the fishing has been solid for most groups, although the fish are getting pickier. We have rain on the way and the river will become larger below each successive tributary. These added flows will bring the winter fish up from the Burnt Ranch canyon. For now, most fish can be found above Douglas City, though the big winter fish will be showing up any day now, so don't disregard fishing lower in the system. Redding ballerina overcomes injury, dances 'Nutcracker' in SoCal
Tchaikovsky’s “Nutcracker” ballet has kept Trinity Peek on her toes for three years. The Redding native is dancing in the chorus of the Long Beach Ballet’s production of the popular Christmas show. "The Nutcracker" is practically a holiday ritual for Peek, who performed the role of the Sugarplum Fairy with Redding City Ballet in 2023 and 2024. Both roles are a long way from her first performance with Redding Ballet's annual show; she played a peppermint in “Nutcracker” when she was 6. “I remember being so excited that I got to do cartwheels on stage,” she said. Dancing is all the sweeter since 2019, when Peek pushed her way back en pointe after an injury that benches many young dancers. While in class “I took an awkward step and felt a pop in my knee,” said Peek, who later learned she’d torn her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL). Peek endured ACL replacement surgery and six months of physical therapy, much of the time spent limping in a brace from her hip to her ankle. ’Tis the season for tamales at Redding bakery with huge secret menu
Victoria’s Bakery-Deli in Redding will be busy this time of year making tamales as well as baking its usual array of authentic Mexican pastries. Don't expect to see a menu at the store. The baker doesn't keep one, but the person at the counter can list off what, besides the baked goods, is coming out fresh from the kitchen that day. Tamales are especially popular for Christmas because they’re part of a Hispanic tradition that’s also embraced by many others for the holidays. “For a lot of people, it’s like (tamales) are their dish to have,” said Rolando Molina, the bakery and deli owner’s son. “It gets busy with the tamale orders,” he said. As an aside, part of the tamale custom is having family and friends gather together for a sort of kitchen camaraderie to make dozens of the delicacies. Tamale makers will prepare the corn dough called masa, add a simmered meat filling – often shredded chicken or pork – and then wrap it up in a corn husk or banana leaves before steaming. You might even call the often daylong process a bonding experience with a savory tamale as the reward. Of course, tamale lovers can skip
