While the Kansas governor’s race was still too close to call Saturday morning, Kansas state Sen. and Democrat Cindy Holscher has pitched voters on lowering costs and pushing back against a Republican supermajority. The prospective governor-elect’s platform touched property taxes, public schools, marijuana, farm costs and data center development. Looking back at her campaigns through the August primary and November general election, here are some takeaways: Property taxes In a column written by Holscher for The Star, she pledged to cut the residential property tax assessment rate and add exemptions for seniors and disabled veterans aren’t “taxed out of the homes they’ve spent a lifetime paying for.” Fund public education She also wrote that she would fully fund public schools and special education, so property taxes don’t make up the difference, and end voucher programs that she said drain neighborhood classrooms Legalize marijuana The Overland Park Democrat announced support for legalizing medical and recreational marijuana in July 2026, filming outside a Kansas City dispensary where she said Kansas plates filling the lot represented “a lot of Kansas tax dollars going straight into Missouri’s pockets.” A few days later, speaking to Kansas City Star journalists, Holscher described a decade-long effort on

Rev. Hamilton is going to Washington. But how often will he come back? Kansans have reasons to wonder, having just booted Sen. Roger Marshall from office Tuesday, in part because of how absent he seemed from the state he represented. Few believed Marshall was rushing back on weekends to the one-bedroom hunting shack he kept in rural Stafford County. His million-dollar vacation home in Sarasota, Florida, seemed a more likely destination when he wasn’t in Washington. Even if Senator-elect Adam Hamilton, who defeated Marshall, wanted to spend his free time on a white-sand Florida beach, he has a practical reason to come home. He has a church to run — and not just any church, but the largest United Methodist congregation in the country, the Leawood-based Church of the Resurrection, with 25,000 members. And he intends to keep running it, at least part-time. Resurrection laid out Hamilton’s plans in a detailed announcement Wednesday. In the short term, Hamilton will attend Senate orientation in Washington, then take a previously planned two-week vacation with his wife, LaVon. He’ll return to the pulpit Nov. 29 and continue leading services through Christmas. “I can hardly wait to return to a regular preaching schedule for
Lieutenant governor-elect T.W. Shannon took on social media to respond to the “blue wave” that saw the Democrat party regain majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate. Among the states flipped were two of Oklahoma's neighbors and historically conservative states, Texas and Kansas. In the Texas governor race, Gina Hinojosa also defeated incumbent Greg Abbott to become the first Democrat in office since 1995. Republican Kevin Hern took the Senate win over N'Kiyla Jasmine Thomas in the Sooner State by over 200,000 votes, while Trump-endorsed Mike Mazzei defeated Cyndi Munson, keeping Oklahoma red. Shannon, who won the Republican primaries outright, shared a series of posts lamenting the results in the neighboring state. More: Recap: Who won in the Oklahoma runoffs? See results of governor's race, more "Dear Texas, Farewell, old friend," Shannon wrote on Thursday. "I’m sorry the blue wave swept across your once-great state. I guess all those Californians moving in didn’t work out too well after all. "Oklahoma is open for business and still Ruby Red! We’re ready to welcome new companies and create more jobs for AMERICANS. We believe in low taxes, stable and limited regulation, and personal freedom. No socialism here, just good

State of Kansas Revenue Collections Exceed Initial Estimates for FY 2026. TOPEKA, Kan. (KPR) — The state of Kansas collected about $10.1 billion in revenue during fiscal year 2026 which ended June 30, finishing roughly $108 million above initial estimates. But Kansas revenue forecasters project the state will collect nearly $785 million more over the next two fiscal years than it did in 2026. The latest estimate puts state revenue at $10.6 billion dollars for fiscal year 2027 and nearly $10.9 billion for 2028. Stronger individual income and corporate tax collections are helping drive the increase. Forecasters also point to inflation, which can push up tax collections as prices rise. The consensus revenue estimate helps lawmakers build the next state budget.

For decades, Kansas represented a predictable place on the country’s political map. Kansas Republicans counted on Sedgwick County to blunt a Democratic surge, with top-of-the-ticket candidates Roger Marshall and Ty Masterson calling it home turf. Instead, the usually red-leaning county broke for Democrats in several major races. FULL STORY: Republicans needed to win Sedgwick County to avoid a blue wave. That didn’t happen Here are key takeaways, based on Election Day results: U.S. Senate: Democrat Adam Hamilton topped Roger Marshall in Sedgwick County, 95,151 to 81,533. Hamilton also won statewide, 556,414 to 503,230. Governor’s race: Democrat Cindy Holscher beat Ty Masterson in the county, 94,148 to 86,007, and appears to have won statewide, with her lead growing as late-arriving mail-in ballots continue to be counted. U.S. House: Democrat Katy Tyndell edged incumbent Ron Estes in Sedgwick County, 89,140 to 87,285, though Estes carried the broader district. Secretary of State and Attorney General: The Democratic candidate for secretary of state, Jennifer Day, and Democratic attorney general candidate Chris Mann both carried Sedgwick County, although Day lost the statewide contest while Mann appears to have defeated Attorney General Kris Kobach. The shift is notable because Donald Trump carried Sedgwick County by more than 30,000 votes in 2024 and visited Park City last month urging
