But ask them and they will tell you that Zack favors the Barbee family and James their mother’s side, the Carters. It’s a tale of two brothers: one that came to Greenville arguably during the worst of times, in 2020, in the midst of a pandemic, and left with a degree and touring in a successful band that formed here, and a brother who is blazing his own trail with some parallels. James and Zack Barbee were born and raised in Concord before coming to Greenville to pursue their education at East Carolina University in 2020 and 2023, respectively. That means they have quite a lot in common with another set of sibling musicians: the Avett Brothers (also from Concord). In fact, James said he has jammed with the Avetts' father on several occasions. Bear Grass football closes 2026 season

The Bear Grass Charter Bears couldn’t slow down Columbia’s offense Friday night, dropping a 34-14 decision to the visiting Wildcats. The loss is the second straight for the Bears, sliding their overall record to 1-8. Bear Grass had its hands full trying to contain Columbia’s Haun Sykes, who put on a clinic. Sykes needed just seven carries to rack up 154 rushing yards and a touchdown — including a crucial 75-yard breakaway run. He also caught a touchdown pass and finished with 62 yards through the air. While the Bears’ defense managed to intercept Columbia quarterback Ethan Sawyer, Sawyer was otherwise highly efficient, throwing for 179 yards and three scores on just 14 attempts. The Bears end the season 1-8 overall and 1-3 in the Atlantic Conference.

High school NIL grows some in N.C.; local impact remains minimal

Two years ago, some feared that by now, the best player on every high school sports team in America would be getting paid. It was then that a Wake County judge granted an injunction that struck down North Carolina’s ban on high school athletes being able to be paid for their name, image and likeness. Much was made at the time of the importance of establishing a means for high school athletes nationwide to have access to the same deals college kids were getting. North Carolina followed suit with other states, establishing an NIL platform for high school athletes similar to the NCAA’s wide-sweeping changes that allowed outside entities to pay the players who were responsible for generating much of the popularity, exposure and revenue enjoyed by their schools. Since the door was kicked open, high school NIL deals in North Carolina have grown somewhat, but their average payout isn’t much and their reach hasn’t been far. Pitt County this year has one athlete on an NIL deal, a first for the county. 'No place like home' Smiles and Frowns Playhouse returns to 'Oz' and stages reunion for 40th anniversary

It’s hard to believe that two decades have passed since Brea Glosson starred as Dorothy in Smiles and Frowns Playhouse’s 20th anniversary production of “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.” Since that time, she has appeared on the college stage, moved to New York to pursue a theatrical career, and written and performed in a one-woman show. But next week, she will come back to where she started in Ayden’s Doug Mitchell Memorial Theater. After all, there’s no place like home. Smiles and Frowns will celebrate its 40th anniversary next week with a return to Oz. “The Wizard of Oz” was the first play performed when the children’s theater group organized in 1986. Over the years, the yellow brick road has become a familiar path, one that Smiles and Frowns has gone down for its 20th and 30th anniversaries as well. For Glosson and other former playhouse actors, it’s a road that leads to their first theatrical home. “I’ll be there in November,” Glosson said in a telephone interview from her home in Brooklyn, New York, where she works as an actor, a playwright, a teacher and a drama therapist. “I have my flight booked and my rental car rented.” Following

Mahjong craze reaches Pitt County

Mahjong is rising in popularity all over the country and now, it has sparked the creation of a new business in Greenville. Amelia Mahjong opened for business in Artisan's Decorative Accessories and Fine Gifts on Plaza Drive on Oct. 17 under the leadership of Claire Boyd and her partner Crystal Reavis. The two longtime friends have been playing the game for some time, building up a group of friends who gathered on a weekly basis to play the game which requires strategy and skill to match tiles that meet the parameters of each round in the game. "Our grandparents played bridge, our mothers played Bunco and we play Mahjong," Boyd said Friday. "We really just wanted to create a sense of community. We wanted people to be able to get together, to socialize and to enjoy themselves." Still, there's a big leap from being a fan of the game to opening a business to support the game.
