California high school suspends football program after alleged misconduct caught on video

A California school district has canceled all remaining varsity, junior varsity and freshman football games and practices at one of its high schools following allegations of misconduct involving members of the varsity team. One team member was arrested in connection with the alleged misconduct. Officials overseeing Fred C. Beyer High School of Modesto also said that varsity head football coach Mike Young was placed on administrative leave late last week after Beyer administrators received reports of cellphone videos involving the alleged misconduct. School officials contacted law enforcement, and Modesto police investigated the allegations, reviewing video evidence that resulted in one juvenile being cited for misdemeanor battery. “We are deeply troubled by allegations involving members of the Fred C. Beyer High School football program,” the Modesto City Schools district said Friday in a statement. “These allegations are extremely serious and have no place in our schools or athletic programs.” The decision to suspend the football program eliminated last week’s set of games and another this week. Few details about what led to the decision have been released. Officials, for example, have not explained whether Young’s administrative leave was related to allegations against him personally, his supervisory responsibilities or another reason. The

Modesto school districts' bond measures need 55% to pass. Here's what early update shows

Editor’s note: Election result numbers in the story will continue to be updated. The numbers in the graphic below are the most up-to-date. Of two Modesto school bond measures that need a 55% supermajority to pass, one appears to have won handily in updated unofficial election results posted early Wednesday morning. The other still needs less than a percentage point of additional support. Modesto City Schools’ Measure K is for only its high school district. In the first updated results, the measure has 58.5% support, or 23,848 votes. Opposition is 41.5%, or 16,884 votes. It would authorize the sale of up to $250 million in bonds by the district and “allow the district to issue additional bonds while extending the current bond tax rate paid by local property owners at a reduced rate of approximately $24 per $100,000 of assessed (not market) value,” according to the district website. The last time MCS passed a bond measure for its high school district was in 2022 with Measure L. About an hour after the polls closed Tuesday, Superintendent Vanessa Buitrago told The Bee via text message, “We must wait for all votes to be counted, but the early results are encouraging for
