CHESTERTOWN — Donning the latest styles from Houston’s Dockside Emporium and Jerry Moe’s, models took to the red tile runway of the Kent County Elks Lodge Sunday afternoon for the second annual “Walking the Runway for Rescues.”

Event organizer Michelle Timmons, owner of Houston’s Dockside Emporium, was inspired to combine her passion for fashion and love of animals to benefit the Animal Care Shelter for Kent County.

“This has been a dream of mine for a few years, to have a fashion show to benefit the shelter,” she said.

Following the roaring success of last year’s inaugural showcase, Timmons and volunteers fervently worked to bring the fundraiser back.

Timmons previously served on the shelter’s Board of Directors and knows first hand the hard work and dedication that goes into each day.

In 2023, over 1,000 animals came into the shelter, a jump from the 832 that arrived in 2022, Timmons said. Through the work of the shelter, homeless animals have a roof over their heads, full bellies and are on their way to a loving home.

The shelter opened a new facility in January 2023, located at 10168 Worton Road, and expenses have only increased including utilities and medicines, she noted.

In addition to models walking the walk, highlighting the latest fashion, friends and food, volunteers shared personal anecdotes of what the shelter means to them and how resources through the shelter made love of a furry friend possible.

Former shelter board member Sue Caswell recounted the amazing work done by volunteers and the crucial need for foster families and donations.

During kitten season, the shelter can go through 90 cans of food each day just for hungry kittens alone, Caswell said.

Pictures and descriptions of cats and dogs ready to find their “fur-ever” homes graced the hall, along with raffles and silent auctions to benefit the animals.

Timmons recognized her Houston’s Dockside Emporium customers who, despite being unable to attend the fashion show, still generously donated to the cause.

“This has been fabulous turnout and great support from the community,” said Timmons, marveling over the crowd.

This year’s “Walking the Runway for Rescues” sold over 100 tickets, raising more than $3,700 for the shelter, she said.

“It’s all about the animals,” Timmons said.
