Iowa Tornado Outbreak: Greenfield Devastation, Emergency Declared
This morning, Iowa faces the aftermath of a catastrophic tornado outbreak that has resulted in multiple fatalities and widespread destruction. Governor Kim Reynolds has declared a disaster emergency across 15 counties after a powerful twister obliterated much of the small town of Greenfield. Meteorologist Scott Withers reports that the severe weather, which started over the weekend, is expected to persist throughout the week. The extent of the damage is heart-wrenching, with drone footage revealing the tornado's path through the center of Greenfield, leaving homes, businesses, and even the county's hospital in ruins. The community has banded together, searching for survivors amidst the debris and enforcing a curfew to ensure safety. Governor Reynolds plans to visit the affected areas today. Meanwhile, massive wind turbines were also toppled, with some igniting fires upon their collapse, contributing to widespread power outages. As crews work tirelessly to restore power, the threat of further severe weather looms. With temperatures soaring to record highs, conditions are ripe for additional tornadic activity. Residents across the affected regions, including those far as New York, are urged to stay vigilant and prepared for the possibility of more severe storms later today.

The Hurtgen Forest
I first met Jim Carr about 25 years ago in Bellows Falls. Jim was always walking on Atkinson Street. Over time we became friendly. Jim is 98. One day I was having a yard sale on Atkinson Street when Jim stopped in. On a table I had a few books for sale. I was standing beside Jim as he thumbed through a World War II book. Jim turned a page. On the two facing pages were Hurtgen Forest battle photos. Jim looked at them and said, “Yes.” Jim was there as a replacement in the 28th Division.
