Be environmentally conscious on National Flip-Flop Day. National Flip Flop-Day is May 31 a day to celebrate the comfortable summer slide-on sandals. The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk used the 2017 observance on June 17 to bring awareness to how flip flops are a danger to the environment and marine life. In 2023 the date was changed to coincide with Memorial Day and the beginning of summer and Virginians can celebrate keeping in mind the 2017 decision by making sure they dispose of the sandals properly. The City of Virginia Beach, GrowSmart, and the GrowSmart Foundation are hosting a free community screening of "The Right to Read" documentary at Zeider's American Dream Theater on June 3. The documentary showcases the stories of an activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide children with the ability to read. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet Director Jenny Mackenzie and the Hunters, a local family featured in the film. The Hunter family enrolled in the GrowSmart LENA START class when their daughter was two months old. Teresa, the mother, went on to become a trained LENA START coordinator with GrowSmart.
