What is the best new Memphis restaurant? See who won our reader poll
More than 50 new restaurants opened in the Memphis area in 2025 — and you resoundingly told us your favorite. Social Desiii Indian Cuisine & Bar in Collierville took the top spot in The Commercial Appeal's online poll to determine the best new restaurant in the Memphis area. Owner Nick Sadal purchased the space in early 2025, which was then home to another Indian restaurant, Amrutha Vilas. Slowly but surely, he “upgraded and rebranded” the place, drastically changing the recipes, layout and décor to make it his own. The menu has been entirely reworked at Social Desiii, and encompasses a range of cuisines from across India. There are Northern dishes like Butter Chicken and Chole Batura (chickpea curry with a deep-fried flatbread), as well as Southern items like Dosas (Indian crepes) and Idly (rice and lentil cakes), well liked as a street food. But that's only the beginning. It’s hard to pick a favorite from a country more diverse in cuisine than many realize. “I don’t have a personal favorite, it really depends on my mood and how I feel,” Sadal said. “Indian food can act like human emotions — what are you in the mood for right now, you

Beloved Memphis seafood restaurant to permanently close after 28 years
Beloved Memphis seafood restaurant Tsunami will permanently close, according to a social media post by owner and executive chef Ben Smith. Since it first opened its doors in 1998 at 928 S. Cooper St., Tsunami has been a staple of the Cooper-Young neighborhood, but according to Smith, that hasn't protected it from the same woes affecting much of the industry — rising costs and a gradual decrease in business. "After much deep introspection... I've decided to close the restaurant permanently," Smith said in a video message on social media. "While there were a thousand small reasons behind this decision, the overriding reason was just that I simply can't afford to do this anymore."
