Nelson Islanders host throwing parties as the subsistence season gets underway

Across the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, subsistence season is well underway. From geese, to ducks, to whitefish and pike, people are out hunting and gathering food to store up for next winter. On Nelson Island, families of the youngest among those hunters and gatherers celebrate with a throwing party.
Kongiganak roots fuel graduating Columbia senior Charitie Ropati
In less than a month, Uquviar Charitie Ropati will be the first Alaska Native woman to graduate from Columbia University’s Civil Engineering program in the department’s more than 155-year history. She says her deep roots in the coastal village of Kongiganak support her through the frustrating work of pushing for change on a global stage.

Electricity challenges persist for Newtok and Mertarvik, where school has been cancelled for more than a week
In January 2023, a fire destroyed the generator that powered the school in Newtok. The Lower Kuskokwim School District (LKSD) replaced it twice. Mechanics arrived in Newtok with another round of replacement parts on March 22 in the hopes that power would be restored in time for school next week.
