Michigan’s economic comeback could begin on Detroit’s east side | Lockwood

It's that time again. Michiganians are heading to the polls, with early voting already underway, to choose our next governor. But one could be forgiven for not being excited. Make no mistake: Leadership matters. The decisions made in Lansing have enormous consequences for Michigan's families, businesses and communities. But Michigan's problems run deeper than any single administration or political party. Consider the numbers. U.S. News & World Report ranked Michigan 46th among the 50 states in 2026, including 43rd in economic performance and 45th in education. Federal economic data ranked Michigan 39th in per capita personal income in 2025 and 40th in economic output per resident. These standings are hardly what one would expect from a state that once stood at the center of American industrial might. Michigan has enormous assets: access to the Great Lakes, world-class universities, manufacturing expertise, an international border and a proud tradition of innovation. Yet for decades, we have struggled to translate those advantages into sustained prosperity. Our political leaders have offered countless programs, incentives and promises. Some have accomplished worthwhile things. But Michigan has lacked the kind of transformative thinking that could fundamentally alter our economic trajectory. We need a big idea. Here's one:

BAINBRIDGE TOWNSHIP — When gas and diesel prices spiked in September, it couldn’t have come at a worse time in pastoral southwestern Michigan. It was the peak of the fall harvest, so the cost of moving corn, apples and soybeans to market was staggering. The timing was sensitive for another reason. It was the final months of the election in the 4th Congressional District in Michigan. The high price of diesel was already an issue before the latest surge. Long-time Republican incumbent U.S. Rep. Bill Huizenga of Holland is being criticized for his support of the Trump administration’s military foray into Iran, which has slowed the shipping of oil through the region. The impact hit this corner of the state disproportionately because, while residents contended with expensive gas, farmers struggled with high diesel costs. The rising cost put a major crimp in the operations on Elle Johnson’s tomato farm in Bainbridge Township, which is eight miles east of Benton Harbor. “Everyone is feeling it,” she said. “It’s part of everything we do.” The race between Huizenga and his Democratic challenger, Michigan state Sen.
