In its New England premiere, “Predictor” by Jennifer Blackmer, playing at Wakefield’s Contemporary Theater Company, tells the true story of how Crane defied all odds and expectations to invent the first home pregnancy test in the late 1960s.

Saunderstown native’s honors brother, history with stirring book
Anyone who lived through that era or who has studied the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s will never forget the murders of James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and Michael Schwerner by members of the Ku Klux Klan, in June 1964. Their abduction and disappearance happened just 10 days before a URI graduate and Saunderstown resident, Luke Kabat, left for Mississippi and ended up taking Schwerner’s place in Meridian.
