CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – The City of Charleston Police released data showing the five worst locations for car crashes last year.

The 58-mile marker on I-64 had 146 crashes in 2023, by far the most of any location in Charleston. Police say the exits onto Virginia Street, Washington Street, and Oakwood Road are the most common accident areas on the interstate.

The intersection of Lee Street and Pennsylvania Avenue was the second-worst, with 36 crashes.

The intersection of Washington Street and Pennsylvania Avenue was third-worst, with 34 crashes including one that was fatal.

    Breaking News

Oakwood and Pennsylvania had 27 crashes, and Randolph and Pennsylvania had 23.

These numbers are according to Charleston Traffic Commander, Sergeant Jessie Redden. She says bumper-to-bumper traffic is common at all five spots, which lends itself to frequent rear-ending. She adds that each spot is where people driving through Charleston from out of town often find themselves, leading to confusion on the roads.

For commuters like Mike Thomas, he says it makes getting to and from work much more frustrating.

“Be patient and be courteous. That’s what we’re known for here in West Virginia. Let people in when they’re trying to get in, when they got the blinker on,” Thomas said.

Redden says while it’s easier said and done, it’s important for commuters to be cautious during their commutes.

“Some people overlook the first light they’re at. It’s easy to do that with a straight line of sight. They look at the other, see it green, they go when theirs is actually yellow. Make eye contact with the pedestrian. That’s for pedestrians too, make eye contact with the motorist.”
