CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) — Apprenticeship helps people become highly skilled employees, and one program is ready to use that to help others with a desire to learn a trade.

On Thursday, the West Virginia Association of Rehab Facilities held a signing ceremony for the creation of it’s custodial apprenticeship program in Charleston. The statewide launch provides paid, on-the-job training with the chance at increased wages.

“It’s one of the first in the nation where we’re actually being able to take some of the frontline employees in the custodial industry and being able to provide them a program with apprenticeship and then moving in to a journeyman level. We’re really excited to be part of this,” Training Coordinator David Swindle said.

Once participants complete the program, they will receive a nationally recognized credential issued by the U.S. Department of Labor, which can also be turned into college credit.
