EL PASO, Texas ( KTSM ) — The Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office (DASO) held a press conference on Wednesday, May 1 after a 37-year-old man died after an officer-involved shooting in Chaparral.

Dona Ana County Sheriff Kim Stewart held the press conference on Wednesday morning, saying that Jose Adrian Guzman, 37, had a history of 35 arrests ranging from disorderly conduct, domestic disturbance, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, trespassing, concealing identity, assault and resisting arrest, battery, and disorderly conduct.

Stewart said the incident happened just after 2 p.m. on Monday, April 29 in Chaparral near Luna Azul and Prescott Anthony Dr.

Stewart said a 911 call was placed about a suspicious person and a possible burglary in progress.

A deputy then made contact with Guzman on the 300 block of Prescott Anthony Drive and discovered that Guzman had a no-bond arrest warrant for disorderly conduct out of DASO.

Stewart said the deputy attempted to arrest Guzman and a short pursuit ensued.

Stewart said the deputy deployed his taser at Guzman multiple times. However, it was “ineffective.”

At one point, the deputy struggled with Guzman for several minutes after activating the taser. The taser was then placed on the ground.

Guzman then grabbed the tazer which was activated and held it in a manner that “he could deploy it,” Stewart said.

Guzman also pointed the taser at the deputy which was “considered potential lethal force,” Stewart said.

Stewart also said the deputy made several calls for additional assistance. However, they were never heard.

The incident is still being investigated by DASO and the Officer-Involved Shooting Task Force.
