Gearhart to raise water rates
GEARHART — The City Council has approved a 10% increase in water rates for the upcoming fiscal year. Last year, a 15% increase was approved in order to keep 90 days of operating funds in reserve at the recommendation of a consultant.

If you look at the wall in the Clatskanie Middle/High School (CMHS) cafeteria, you’ll see the school’s track and field records displayed. One name holds two of the boys records, two of the longest-standing records in school history. Ken Cutcher set the school record for shot put and discus in 1971. The need for affordable housing has been a hot-button topic in recent months and years, and Columbia County Habitat for Humanity is aiming to meet some of the demand with a 10-home project for low-income families in Scappoose. Kelso School District's unique approach helps homeless students thrive
KELSO, Wash. — The Kelso School District in southwest Washington is taking a unique approach to help its homeless students. While many schools provide food and clothes to homeless students, in Kelso, staff help students with anything they need. Whether it be shoes or any other item, administrators work to ensure kids have everything they need to be successful. Community members and local businesses, like Target and Panera, also donate to the district frequently.
Junior Salmon Auction Raises Funds
The Junior Salmon Auction was held this year on May 16 and raised $1,600 for the Vernonia Schools art program. A collaboration between the Vernonia School District, VMS/VHS Art Teacher Jessica Kintz, and Vernonia Hands on Art, this annual event features artwork created by students, which is auctioned each year. This year the German class, Band and Choir, and the Machinery and Woods classes also had items for sale to support their programs.

The Vintage Motor Car Club of America is coming to Astoria June 13 and June 14 as part of a seven-year adventure following the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail across the U.S. For those with long memories, the national club used to have a chapter in Astoria in the 1990s called the Veterans Motor Car Club of America.
