A Santa Monica man was arrested Monday after he reportedly led California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers on a slow speed chase after he was allegedly “suspiciously following a big rig” north of Castaic.

Around 12:20 a.m. Monday, CHP Newhall units received a call of a suspicious vehicle following a big rig on the southbound 5 Freeway at Templin Highway, north of Castaic, said officer Josh Greengard, spokesperson for the CHP Newhall Area Office .

“CHP units located the suspect vehicle, a Hyundai SUV, on the southbound I-5 at McBean Parkway.  CHP officers attempted to make an enforcement stop, at which time the Hyundai failed to stop,” Greengard said.

The suspect led CHP units on a slow pursuit , with speeds of 45 to 55 mph, according to Greengard.

“The suspect came to a stop on the right shoulder on I-5 southbound, at Weldon Canyon,” Greengard said. “At which time CHP Newhall Units took the driver into custody.”

David Johnson, 40, from Santa Monica, was arrested for misdemeanor evading and was booked at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.
