Jan. 31, 1961: 'Misfits' premieres in Reno, fuels Truckee River myth
"The Misfits," an 1961 film set in and around Reno, stars Clark Gable and Marilyn Monroe in their final performances, alongside Montgomery Clift. The film, which premiered in Reno on Jan. 31, 1961, checks nearly all the boxes of midcentury Reno references: quickie divorce, ranching, wild mustangs, casinos and rodeo. Near the beginning of the film, Monroe's character, Roslyn Tabor, files for divorce at the Washoe County Courthouse, walks to the nearby Virginia Street Bridge and throws her wedding ring into the Truckee River. But did divorcées really throw their rings into the river, or was the scene just Hollywood fiction? Former Nevada state archivist Guy Rocha looked into the origins of the myth in a column originally published in the Reno Gazette Journal in 2001. More: The 5 best (and 5 worst) movies set in Northern Nevada Truckee River ring toss dates back to at least 1929 Rocha wrote: Some writers argue that ring tossing in what once was known as the Divorce Capital of the World is a myth. Others claim the legendary ritual began as a publicity stunt that may have been imitated by divorcées. People have been debating for years whether dropping wedding rings into the

A Detroit-style pizzeria in Reno is scheduled to show up in Flavortown this evening. Peckham Lane is one of several restaurants visited by food celebrity Guy Fieri during a trip to Reno in September. Fieri confirmed that he was shooting new episodes in Reno while promoting his joint tequila venture with former Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar at a Lee’s Discount Liquor store. “I haven’t shot triple-D (Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives) in Reno for a while so we shot some triple-D today (and) we’re shooting some tomorrow,” Fieri said at the time. Owner Marvin Kinney still remembers being surprised when the show first reached out. “Our guests emailed them and they looked us up online and reached out to a few people,” Kinney said. “It was really cool.” Kinney was unable to share details about Fieri’s visit and what food will be featured until the show airs. A look at the restaurant’s menu reveals several takes on Detroit’s trademark rectangular pizza, including a 313 Prime Pizza blanketed in
