SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Two North County cities are set to receive nearly $11.4 million dollars from the state to help move homeless individuals into permanent housing, California Governor Gavin Newsom announced Thursday.

The cities of Oceanside and Carlsbad partnered up to submit a joint grant application and were among the 17 areas statewide chosen to receive the funding.

More San Diegans have become homeless than those housed for two years

According to a release from the city of Oceanside, the money is intended to go toward supporting individuals living in encampments along State Route 78 and moving them into a variety of housing options.

According to the region’s latest Point in Time Count from 2023, there were 298 sheltered homeless people and 290 unsheltered in Oceanside.

In Carlsbad, 19 homeless people reported being sheltered and 73 were unsheltered.

The city of Oceanside said anything provided through the grant would be aimed at addressing a variety of needs presented by people experiencing homelessness in encampments. The awards are part of California’s Encampment Resolution Fund (ERF) grants.
