Weekly Safety Report: Former Student Killed in Osprey Crash, Fatal Accident on I-64 in Morehead, Kentucky
This week in Morehead, Kentucky, two incidents occurred that impacted the community. The first incident involved the tragic death of former Morehead State University student Kody Johnson, who was one of eight Americans killed in an Osprey crash during a training mission in Japan. Johnson served in the U.S. Airforce and attended MSU from 2009-2012. The second incident involved a fatal single-vehicle accident on I-64 near the 137 WB exit, where a woman lost her life.

Hometown Holidays 2023
Holiday cheer was spread for all to hear in downtown Morehead. The city of Morehead held its annual Hometown Holiday celebration with a parade that traveled through downtown on Friday, December 1, and many other events on Saturday, December 2. A Storybook Christmas at Corey’s Café, open houses for small businesses and a variety of live music all helped to get the community into the Christmas spirit.

Rowan County Christmas still seeking gift donations
Organizers of Rowan County Christmas are still looking for volunteers and toy donations. The local nonprofit has been around since 1993 and works to make sure every child in Rowan County receives a gift and a meal on Christmas Day. Officials said donations of cash and new unopened toys are needed and can be donated to an angel tree set up at First Federal Bank or sent to P.O. Box 1323, Morehead Kentucky.

Dr. Escalante departs from Morehead State University
Dr. Roosevelt Escalante closed the door on his career at Morehead State University with his holiday finale concert. Escalante, a professor of music, led a farewell concert featuring the Black Gospel Ensemble, Jazz Vocal Ensemble and Elevated Praise. His students and members of the community had the opportunity to celebrate him through the musical performances.
