I want to congratulate Roger Akeley on his column in the BDN regarding the efforts to remove the lower three dams on the Megunticook River in Camden. I am so glad he spoke out, and I agree with all his points.

The falls in question, particularly those at the Montgomery Dam, are absolutely beautiful and bring pleasure to those who see them. Additionally, there is no demonstrated history of the Megunticook ever being a river used by migratory fish because of the granite ledge at its foot inhibiting the passage of fish.

I think a group of people in Camden are misleading the people into thinking that fish will migrate up the river if the dams are gone. I’m confident they won’t since they apparently never did. And the cost of these changes are astronomical, even with a grant , which would be money better spent elsewhere.

There is potentially going to be a vote on the dam decision on this November’s election ballot. I hope those who want to preserve the beauty and history of Camden will vote to oppose the dam destruction.
