For 27 years, Nancy Harris served in the military. But her newest act of service could be argued as her most special. Harris is the newest commander of Wells McComas Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2678 in Edgemere. The honor holds close meaning — her mother was a former president of the post and her father was a former commander. Though she did not think about that while running for the role, the thought has since crossed her mind. “This holds special significance for me,” Harris said at the May installation ceremony. “Their service and commitment fostered enduring relationships within the organization. It is a privilege to follow in their footsteps.” Harris’ military career started in 1987 as a medic in the Army Reserve, deployed during Operation Desert Storm. After returning home, she transferred into the West Virginia Air National Guard as a C-130 aeromedical evacuation technician and later became a C-130 loadmaster for the Maryland Air National Guard. The second annual “Great Pumpkin Smash” will return to Honeygo Run Regional Park on Saturday Nov. 7 from 10:00 a.m. tp 1:00 p.m. for county residents to gather and, as the name suggests, smash their leftover halloween pumpkins. The free, family-friendly event, hosted by County Executive Kathy Klausmeier and the Department of Public Works and Transportation, will bring the community together while supporting the county’s composting initiatives. No registration is required. Residents may bring their leftover pumpkins and use a variety of tools provided by the department. After the event, the collected pumpkins will be transported to the county’s composting site at Eastern Sanitary Landfill in White Marsh, where they will break down into nutrient-rich compost for local sustainability projects. Composting helps conserve valuable landfill space and reduce greenhouse gas emissions at Baltimore County’s only active landfill. In addition to the Pumpkin Smash, attendees can enjoy giveaways, games, snacks and educational exhibits from several county agencies, offering activities for guests of all ages. For residents who find that smashing pumpkins is not their cup of tea, pumpkins can be dropped off for composting. The full press release can be found at the Baltimore County Government Website.
