More 2026 James Beard hopefuls across Wisconsin
Milwaukee's six chefs, bars and restaurants aren’t the only ones recognized in the state by the James Beard Foundation this year. Twelve total in Wisconsin were named semifinalists , and outside Milwaukee, they represent Madison, Appleton and Door County. They’re all first-timers, too. Here's a look at the semifinalists from outside of the Milwaukee area. Adam Marty of Appleton’s Ellinor Marty, the chef-owner of restaurant Ellinor , is the first-ever semifinalist from Appleton. He’s named as a semifinalist in the category of Best Chef: Midwest. His restaurant is known for its casually refined setting with a wood-fired oven at its center. Kasey Lee Cooke of Madison’s Mint Mark Cooke is a semifinalist in the Best Chef: Midwest category. He joined Madison’s popular Mint Mark restaurant in 2024, after the restaurant moved from its Winnebago Street location to a larger space on Washington Avenue. Milwaukee's semifinalists: Meet Milwaukee's James Beard Award contenders, all first-timers Public Parking in Madison In the national category of Best New Bar is Madison’s Public Parking . The bar serves original cocktails, tiki-inspired drinks, punches, slushies, mocktails, wine, beer and more. Since opening in October 2024, Public Parking has been named by both Bon Appétit and Punch

The 5 Hands-Down Best Coffee Shops In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, According To Locals
You'll never go thirsty in Milwaukee. Wisconsin's largest city is a beer-forward destination with a rich brewing past — not to mention, Milwaukee has an outrageous cocktail culture and is the Bloody Mary Capital of the World. If you prefer to sip on something a little less strong, you could always opt for a cup of joe. Indeed, the "Culinary Capital of the Midwest," known for cheese, sausage, and beer, is a coffee-centric city (and probably has been for longer than you might realize).

Dining Tidbits: Blue Star Cafe’s Sambusas, Danish Kringles, and More
The great Somali restaurant Blue Star Cafe has managed to stay under the radar for 13 years. Fans come to the modest south-of-Brady storefront (1619 N. Farwell Ave.) for samosa-like sambusas and platters of rice, vegetables, chicken, goat or steak seasoned with xawaash, a warm spice blend (cumin, cinnamon, cardamom, etc.), and topped with raisins and cubed potato. Even as times have been tough for restaurants, support has not wavered, Abdirizak Aden says.

Catrina Café’s Wealth of Mexican-Milwaukee Choices
Ducking through the doors of Catrina Café on a winter day can be a little bit like stepping through a magic portal—the contrast between the frigid January weather in Milwaukee and the warm, boisterous atmosphere of a Mexican cantina is startling in all the best ways. The restaurant's Mexican-Milwaukee fusion is immediately reflected in the long bar, high ceilings, exposed Cream City brick, dark wood tables with wooden chairs and leather banquette seating. Catrina opened on the north end of Walker's Point in 2024 and obviously hit the bullseye. It started as a brunch spot inside the existing Snifters Tapas & Spirits but had taken over the property by the end of the year; the owners are teasing a second location to open in Bayview in 2026.

American Family Field Strikes Out Again On Summer Concert Giants
Milwaukee's American Family Field looks like it could sit on the concert bench for a second straight summer, with no major stadium headliner locked in and plenty of big-name tours choosing other Wisconsin stops instead. The retractable-roof ballpark has pulled in heavy hitters in recent years, but this spring's tour announcements are largely skipping the Brewers' home turf.

Biggby Bails on Brew City as Red Arrow, Franklin Shops Go Dark
Two Biggby Coffee shops that had become part of the Milwaukee-area coffee circuit abruptly closed on Monday, March 9, 2026, taking out the downtown Red Arrow Park kiosk and a storefront in Franklin in one shot. The sudden shutdown wiped out a convenient stop for skaters and nearby office workers, and regulars were left staring at dark windows where their morning caffeine used to be. The closures also mark a quick pullback for a brand that only recently planted its flag in the local market.
