CADIZ, Ky. ( FOX 56 ) — A Cadiz man was charged Thursday evening after making multiple calls asking for emergency assistance and then threatening law enforcement, according to the Trigg County Sheriff’s Office.

Trigg County 911 operators said in the Trigg County Sheriff’s Office (TCSO) citation that Matthew Riggs, 43, had been making multiple calls to VA crisis hotlines, only to refuse treatment and threaten emergency personnel when they finally arrived and offered help. Riggs reportedly also refused mental health treatment, which was offered by the Trigg County Sheriff’s Office, according to court documents.

TCSO began reportedly receiving calls from the VA crisis hotline requesting a welfare check on Riggs.

Court documents state that around 6:05 p.m. on Thursday, in the 100 block of Oak Lane, TCSO deputies arrived at the residence of Riggs, who was reportedly intoxicated and exited the residence, threatening to commit suicide and eventually allegedly threatening deputies.

When asked not to go back into his home, Riggs reportedly refused, at which point TCSO deputies charged Riggs and took him into custody.

TSCO deputies reported in their citation that Riggs appeared to be under the influence of drugs, and, while being transported to the Trigg County Justice Center, allegedly “beat his head against the partition in the vehicle causing injury to his head and severe bleeding.”

Riggs was reportedly transported to the Trigg County Hospital, where deputies said he continued to “be belligerent” and threaten medical and law enforcement staff.

Riggs was charged with second-degree disorderly conduct, third-degree terroristic threatening, and resisting arrest. He was lodged at the Trigg County Hospital, where he is being treated for his alleged self-inflicted injuries under police custody.
