Look Back ... to the Greenleaf mansion destroyed by fire, 1999
May 25, 1949, in The Star: Anniston city detectives today arrested a Birmingham traveling salesman, who was said to have in his possession an “enormous quantity” of obscene literature. Anniston High School Principal John J. Nash, who has been working closely with city police in an effort to halt the distribution of obscene books and pictures in local schools, identified the confiscated material as being similar to some previously discovered circulating among school students. Police chief Lawrence Peek said the arrest of the 40-year-old traveling grocery salesman was the result of a two-month campaign to end the sale and distribution of such matter in Anniston. Police indicated that the suspect was essentially a wholesaler to others who in turn would serve as outlets for material’s sale at the street level. Also this date: Friends and family today are mourning the death yesterday afternoon of the Rev. Harold Lofton Rhodes, 29-year-old son of the DeArmanville postmaster. Rev. Rhodes was a chaplain in the war — during some of the worst fighting in the European theater — and a onetime graduate student at Harvard University. Described by DeArmanville neighbors as a “peach of a fellow,” Rev. Rhodes was said to be a “serious type” who also “always saw the humorous side of things.” At the time of his death he was on leave from the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Locally, he was a graduate of Calhoun County High School in Oxford. He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Wiley H. Rhodes, and by six brothers.
