Letter to the Editor
To say Albia and Monroe County lost one of its greatest treasures last week when Colleen Putnam lost her long battle with cancer is to say the sun is bright or the sky is blue. It didn’t take long after moving to Albia in the fall of 1982 to meet Colleen and her husband Bob. Bob was sort of the stereotype of the laid back southern gentleman. Colleen was also born and raised in Putnam County, Mo. but she was anything but laid back. She was an absolute blur of energy and enthusiasm. You saw it in the way she power-walked, the way she talked and in the glowing brightness of her eyes. She was a member of the Carnegie-Evans Library board when I was appointed 40 years ago, serving with Helen Homerin, Robert T. Bates, Betty Bonker, Sylvia Rosenthal and Matt Foster (a veritable who’s who of Albia educators and Hall of Famers). It was there that I was introduced to her devotion to literacy.
