A historic run by the Lompoc Rocket League Esports team ended with a 4-0 loss to Los Angeles Franklin in the CIF state final Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson. This marked the first year Lompoc fielded Esports teams. The Lompoc Rocket League squad of captain Carlin Durrett, Isaiah Dumiao and Fabian Martinez won four CIF matches to get to the state final. Lompoc, after trailing 2-0, rallied to edge Lynwood 4-3 in the semis to reach the state final.

Orcutt kids bike clubs thriving after humble beginnings
The Orcutt Kids Bike Club (OKBC) began in 2016 with three moms and their kids meeting up to ride the local trails, President Julie Silva said in an organization news release. From that humble beginning, the club became its own entity, registered as a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization that is 100 percent volunteer-led. Today, the program has more than 110 riders and more than 50 coaches.

Will ‘The Orchard’ Housing Proposal Take Root?
This week, the county Board of Supervisors will move forward with a plan to rezone at least 16 sites to accommodate more than 7,600 units of housing on the South Coast, including some former agricultural land, school properties, and vacant lots. But a proposal by a Goleta family to transform 60 acres of orchards into a 1,200-unit mixed-income housing development — complete with its own parks, daycare, café, and pharmacy — was nixed from the list of potential rezones by the county Planning Commission at the last minute. It was a shock to many, including the family that has owned the property for decades, and leaves a large question mark as to the future of “The Orchard” development on Hollister Avenue.

An Old Town Orcutt pizzeria and a Los Olivos café are two of the businesses hoping to keep their outdoor dining areas as Santa Barbara County adopts new rules for parklets.
