Day of Prayer draws Gough Park crowd
More than 100 people gathered at noon in Gough Park last Thursday to lift their voices in praise for the 73rd National Day of Prayer. “In cities and capitals all across the United States, this is going on,” said Susan Bryant, the Grant County coordinator for the National Day of Prayer, ticking off simultaneous events happening in Washington, D.C., Albuquerque and Deming. “And here we are in Silver City, so it’s kind of neat to think that we’re all getting to do this together.”
FBI joins investigation into stolen paintings
TAOS, N.M. — The FBI is taking on the investigation of two stolen paintings that happened nearly 40 years ago in Taos. In 2017, David Van Auker, owner of an antique shop in Silver City, was sent to a house in Cliff, New Mexico, to check out the estate of Jerry and Rita Alter. As Van Auker and his two partners went around the house, they noticed something in one of the rooms.

Of the more than 1,800 New Mexico men who fought on the Philippines’ Bataan Peninsula in World War II and were taken prisoner, only about 900 made it home. On Wednesday — 81 years after he died in a prisoner of war camp — one more of those soldiers returned to Grant County.
