“S” is for Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel
“S” is for Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel. The Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel is an unfinished nineteenth-century railroad tunnel located near Walhalla. In the 1850s Stumphouse Mountain played a key role in South Carolina's attempt to participate in antebellum America's commercial revolution. Planners contemplated cutting a one-and-one-half mile railroad tunnel through the mountain to link the state's rail lines with the Blue Ridge Railroad coming from Knoxville, Tennessee. This enterprise, if successful, would have linked Charleston with the commercial heartland of the young nation. Unfortunately, the price of tunneling through Stumphouse Mountain proved prohibitive and the project was abandoned. In 1951 Clemson College purchased the tunnel and for several years experimented with curing blue cheese in its cool, damp environment. Clemson leased the tunnel to the Pendleton Historic District in 1970, and the Stumphouse Mountain Tunnel was open to the public.

Woodruff Road project hits $277M, delaying other Greenville road work
Long-awaited congestion relief is coming to Woodruff Road, with work expected to begin in summer of 2027. But as the project’s price tag climbs, other planned road improvements could be pushed back. The South Carolina Department of Transportation Woodruff Road Congestion Relief Project , which will construct a parallel parkway along Woodruff Road, has been in the works for more than a decade. The project aims to alleviate congestion on the busy corridor, which sees traffic volumes of more than 40,000 vehicles per day during peak times, according to SCDOT. In recent years inflation has more than doubled the project's estimated cost, forcing officials to have to figure out how to keep the Woodruff Road project moving forward – with their answer ultimately being to delay other projects. "We've spent the last 15 years working on this project and from the beginning it has been objectively ranked, in the GPATS planning document and the SCDOT environmental assessments, as the highest priority project in the region," said Keith Brockington, transportation manager, Greenville-Pickens Transportation Study . Officials prioritize Woodruff Road, delaying other road projects In 2020, the Woodruff Road Congestion Relief Project received funding through a South Carolina Transportation Infrastructure Bank grant,
