Pheasant hunt helps SPS students build understanding of the outdoors
The Ozarks, known for their natural beauty and outdoor recreation, are a home and destination for fishermen, hunters and campers alike. Hearing dozens of gunshots ring out over a shooting range or conservation area may not be out of the ordinary, but on Tuesday, Jan. 20, gaggles of seventh and eighth graders were the ones pulling the triggers. Students from Westport K-8 and Cherokee and Carver middle schools spent the day at the Andy Dalton Shooting Range and Outdoor Education Center as part of their outdoor awareness class curriculum in partnership with the Missouri Department of Conservation. Over the course of four weeks, fifth graders in the Wonders of the Ozarks Learning Facility, or WOLF, program and middle schoolers from different schools across Springfield Public Schools are learning to properly hold shotguns and go on their own pheasant hunts. The day started with a safety briefing — with MDC staff teaching the proper stance when shooting, the necessary safety equipment, types of ammunition and other pertinent information. As a prerequisite, all students had to have taken and passed hunter education in advance of the field trip. Students first practiced their aim with clay pigeons. Then, after lunch, students were able

Indie film ‘Kings’ brings Springfield story to Alamo Drafthouse
The independent film "Kings" will premiere at 7:20 p.m. Feb. 6 at Alamo Drafthouse Springfield, 4005 South Ave. The 49-minute feature, written and directed by Carter Breaux, will be followed by a live Q&A with the filmmakers, according to a community announcement. Additional screenings will be added based on audience demand. 'Kings' filmed in the Queen City Shot entirely in Springfield, "Kings" is the result of collaboration across the southwest Missouri film community. The film was created by dozens of local cast and crew members, many of whom connected through the SATO 48 film challenge, an annual filmmaking event in the Ozarks. "Kings" follows a meticulous chess champion and a scheming poker hustler who find themselves locked in a battle of wits after discovering a box of money in a dumpster. The film blends tension and dark humor while exploring strategy, chance and the thin line between control and chaos. Breaux wrote, directed, edited and produced the film, working closely with director of photography Taylor Hoos. The two met while studying digital film production at Missouri State University. The project also received support from several local businesses and organizations, including Ozair Charter Service, Springfield Chess Club and Studio One. More:
