PHOTO OF THE DAY: TWO YEARS AGO …
This photo was taken almost exactly two years ago to the day following a May 12, 2024 derecho that had a major impact on the region. The image was made on May 13 and shows the Stuart Curry farm north of Freeman along Highway 81 that was among the hardest hit of any property around. Curry has written a reflection of that devastating day and an update that is included in this week’s Courier. Check it out online Wednesday afternoon and in print on Thursday.
PHOTO OF THE DAY: GOODBYE, MR. VOSS
Students at Freeman Elementary spent part of their last morning of the 2023-24 school year showering their beloved principal, Shane Voss, with hugs, fist-bumps, cheers, cards, signs and heartfelt “goodbyes” as a way to send off the retiring administrator. “It just kind of took your breath away,” Voss said of the surprise sendoff. “I had to fight back tears. I was just hoping I could sneak out the backdoor; I’m not one who likes a lot of uproar. It was pretty humbling.”
PHOTO OF THE DAY: PICTURE PERFECT MORNING
The gazebo at the Freeman Prairie Arboretum is pictured on a gorgeous Monday morning. While there’s a haze in the air from wildfires in Canada — the Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources has issued an air quality alert — the sun is shining and highs today and tomorrow are expected to climb into the 70s. A chance of rain returns on Wednesday.
