Longtime clerk of clerk faces political newcomer in Edgecombe County

Edgecombe County Clerk of Court Carol Allen White has served for more than three decades in office but she is facing a challenge from a legal assistant with the District Attorney’s Office who previously worked as a paralegal and who before that served in the military. Voters are deciding today whether they want White, a Democrat, to serve for another four years as the superior court clerk or whether they want to replace her with Lisa Webb, a Republican who is conducting her first campaign for public office. At stake is who for the next four years in Edgecombe County is going to be responsible for all clerical and record-keeping functions of both the superior court and the district court. District courts handle cases of lower-level crimes and civil cases between $10,000 to $25,000. Superior courts hear cases involving felony crimes, civil cases involving $25,000 or more and appeals from district courts. White also is seeking reelection in a county that has long been historically pro-Democrat, and she is running on her experience. Democratic challenger defeats one-term DA in a landslide victory

An overwhelming majority of voters in Edgecombe, Nash and Wilson counties cast ballots to replace first-term incumbent District Attorney Jeff Marsigli with Democratic challenger Rena Spellman. Four years ago, Marsigli, a Republican, defeated longtime incumbent Democrat Robert Evans by 79 votes in a hard-hitting contest, but unofficial results on Tuesday showed that this year’s contest between Marsigli and Spellman was a big win for the Democrat. Spellman in the three counties in the 8th District combined received 49,878 votes (slightly more than 57.2%) to Marsigli’s 37,271 (nearly 42.8%), according to unofficial vote tallies. That is a 12,607-vote difference. Spellman was victorious in all three counties, with her most narrow win coming in Nash County where she received 21,697 votes (slightly more than 53.5%) to Marsigli’s 18,824 votes (nearly 46.5%). In Wilson County, Spellman received 16,112 votes (nearly 56%) to Marsigli’s 12,689 votes (slightly more than 44%). And in long-historically pro-Democratic Edgecombe County, Spellman received 12,069 votes (67.7%) to Marsigli’s 5,758 votes (32.3%). All vote tallies are unofficial until canvassing. Neither Spellman nor Marsigli could be reached for comment. However, in phone interviews last month with both candidates, the topic of discussion centered around experience. On a beautiful afternoon in rural Edgecombe County, a crowd gathered under the late‑season sun to hear a message that has become impossible to ignore across eastern North Carolina: Families are hurting, and area leaders say the state must do more. A Martin County native is coming back home to Williamston to talk about her third book. Leah Weiss, who was born in Williamston, left North Carolina around the age of 10. She spent the rest of her adolescence in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia. This will be Weiss’ second time to visit Martin Memorial in recent years to discuss her books. In 2021, she visited to talk about her second book All the Little Hopes, which takes place in a town much like Williamston — the fictional Riverton — during World War II. Weiss said Williamston’s historic German POW camp inspired All the Little Hopes. Wiess considers herself “southern by grace.” “My roots run deep in the flat lands of North Carolina,” she said. Her first book, If the Creek Don’t Rise, set in Appalachia, sold over 100,000 copies. Weiss began writing full-time after retiring from a 24-year career as Executive Assistant to the headmaster at Virginia Episcopal School in 2015, becoming a best-selling author late in life. A hat trick of accomplishments

Two county commissions and a town council each had individual meetings last week and together the results of those meetings have accomplished a hat trick in the goal department. Now we’re not speaking of a Gordie Howe hat trick — a goal, an assist and a fight in one game — we’re talking about three local governmental bodies achieving major accomplishments in the same week. That’s commendable. Last week, Bertie County, Martin County and the town of Edenton, each took steps worth celebrating. Bertie County cut the ribbon on the Taj Mahal of local animal shelters, Drew Batts held a well-attended community forum in Martin County and the Edenton Town Council came steps closer to a healthy choice for residents craving new flavors at a new local grocery store. Bertie County Manager Juan Vaughan, former Assistant County Manager David Scarborough, Commission Chair Corey Ballance and the entire Bertie Board of Commissioners deserve high praise.
