When he started playing guitar at age 8, Michael Schott was probably called “precocious.” After writing his first song at age 9 and later being asked to write the music for a documentary, some likely started referring to the young musician from the Carteret County community of Stella as the other “p” word: “prodigy.” Even if one conservatively avoids such labels, in anyone’s book it’s hard to describe the state of Schott’s music career, long before he is even able to drive, as anything short of remarkable. On Dec. 10, he was awarded “Entertainer of the Year” by the Carolina Country Music Association. Schott’s grandfather (who has the same name, but goes by “Mike”) is his business manager. He jokes about his grandson being an “old soul” who is well-spoken during interviews: “Although he is 14 years old, you would bet that he is going on his third divorce!” Describing some highlights of Michael’s career so far, Mike said that he composed a song called “Dusty Jones” when he was 9, which later caught the attention of Nashville producer and former member of Rascal Flatts Tom Yankton.
