People, News & Notes: Marco's Pizza opens new location in Winterville Commons
The Winterville Chamber of Commerce joined Marco’s Pizza in celebrating the grand opening of its new location in Winterville Commons with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday. Lowe’s Foods anchors the shopping center. Locally owned by Andrew Reed, alongside his brother and business partner Alf, Marco’s Pizza brings a strong focus on quality, value and community involvement to eastern North Carolina, the chamber said. Reed, a Wilson native and NC State graduate, launched his first store in Greenville just over a year ago; the Winterville location will be his second in the area. He pointed to ECU, a family-based community and a strong community presence as key reasons for opening locally, he said. Marco’s dough is made fresh daily in-store, and all ingredients meet the same standard. A strong emphasis is on affordability, working to provide value while maintaining high quality and service expectations across carryout and delivery. Marco’s supports local schools through fundraisers and percentage nights, partners with youth sports teams and looks for opportunities to give back whenever possible. Inside the restaurant, guests experience a personal touch, Reed said. The Winterville location officially opened Feb. 2 and will offer carryout and delivery service. Located in a corner storefront at

Community celebrates Roberta Flack’s legacy
FARMVILLE — The community earned its name from a rural heritage of agriculture, where tobacco was once king. But Friday night, Farmville was an artistic cultural mecca, and Roberta Flack was its queen. Main Street sidewalks teemed with eager show-goers under a marquee that bore Roberta Flack’s name. The five-time Grammy award-winning performer was born Feb. 10, 1937, and died Feb. 24, 2025, so it was only fitting that a tribute to her life was held Friday as part of Emerge Gallery and Art Center’s African American Music Series. While the legend’s birthplace was a good deal west of Pitt County, in Black Mountain, she famously taught school for about a year at H.B. Sugg in Farmville, teaching high school English and music for $2,800 a year. So it is natural that to Farmville natives, Roberta Flack was one of their own. After virtually every seat in the Paramount Theater was filled and a buzz of excitement settled, the Roberta Flack Tribute Show opened with the poetry of Regina YC Garcia. She stood before a larger-than-life image of the honoree projected on the back wall, her rhythmic words punctuated by music from The Rakiem Walker Project. In her sing-song voice,

On freezing day, couple serves up hot dogs
EDENTON — The entrepreneurial spirit was on full display Saturday, Feb. 7, which happened to be one of Edenton’s coldest days of the year. A cold snap was pushing through Edenton from the Great Lakes region, causing the thermometer to plunge below freezing, but a brisk wind dragged the wind chill factor to under 25 degrees. Yet the Edenton Hot Dog Company was at its post serving a warm winter pick-me-up on the corner of South Broad and King Streets. Mitch and Kim Davis are the owners and hot dog chefs for the Edenton Hot Dog Company. Mitch was plating up a dog with chili and mustard as Kim rang up the order. “We want to show the people that we’re going to be out here — cold or windy, we’ll be here,” Mitch said. The couple can be found at the Edenton Farmer’s Market on most Saturdays or at their preferred downtown post next to Surf, Wind and Fire at Broad and King. The two began their hot dog business in October, making 2026 their first full year in what Mitch said is a part-time retirement gig.
