Wyandotte County voters will find something new at the polls on Election Day: DJs

Ben Rich is an electrical engineer by day. On the side he deejays at proms, weddings, concerts, comedy shows, holiday parties, bar mitzvahs and fundraisers around Kansas City. On Election Day, you’ll find him outside two polling places in Wyandotte County, where he lives, playing music for voters — something he’s never done in his 17 years as a DJ. He’ll start the day at 7 a.m. outside Oak Ridge Missionary Baptist Church. He expects long lines. But if some people aren’t planning to vote, he hopes the promise of good music will help draw them. “I know sometimes we can have long lines or people are getting off of work or finding the time of day to get to the polls,” said Rich. “Why not bring a vibe and some music and good tunes to the community and the process while they’re doing that … “It gives me an opportunity to be a part of the community that I was raised in, but also help with voter turnout, to encourage people to be out.” Rich is one of a handful of Kansas City DJs who will play music at WyCo polling places on Tuesday. Olathe reopens 119th Street with new roundabout. Nearby bridge remains closed

An intersection in northwest Olathe that closed in March has reopened, allowing traffic back into the well-traveled area with a brand-new roundabout. The city announced on social media that the 119th Street intersection with Northgate Street and Nelson Road is back open to traffic , but a nearby bridge remains closed. Over the past several months, crews have been at work rebuilding the road as part of the 119th Street Extension Project . A roundabout was constructed at 119th and Northgate streets, connecting to a nearby bridge. A portion of Nelson Road was also rebuilt southwest of the roundabout. “The 119th Street bridge will remain closed while the City awaits delivery of exterior bridge railing materials needed to safely open the bridge,” the city said on Facebook. The bridge spans Mill Creek and the nearby BNSF railroad. City leaders said they anticipate reopening the bridge to traffic by the end of November. A ‘missing link’ in Olathe The overall project is intended to develop a “missing link” of 119th Street between Northgate Street and Woodland Road. Saline County sees higher than usual early voter turnout

This year's mid-term election has seen a surge of Kansas voters casting ballots in person in advance, including in Saline County. Wyandotte County in northeast Kansas reports early voting has nearly tripled. Advance voting began Oct. 19 and will continue through Nov. 2. The Kansas Secretary of State’s office reported on its website that 161,838 Kansans had voted in person and 42,317 had cast mail ballots as of Oct. 26, meaning 204,155 Kansans had voted in advance. The state had sent out 103,679 mail ballots, with 40.82% of those having been returned, that site said. Saline turnout has been higher than usual, county clerk says Saline County Clerk Tammy Arnold said advance voting turnout was higher than usual last week, when 2,658 ballots were cast. Figures weren't available showing how that compared to the general elections the last two times the governor's race was on the ballot, in 2018 and 2022.
