BUZZARDS BAY — A two-hour recount of the May 21 School Committee write-in votes got underway Monday morning in the town hall basement at Perry Avenue, but in the end the election results did not change.

There were two open seats for the School Committee at the town election. But only one person, Kari MacRae, filed nomination papers to be on the ballot. Following the election, three write-in candidates for the second seat emerged.

Town Clerk Barry Johnson at 12:30 p.m. announced final results of the recount.

Kathleen Quintal was again declared the school board write-in winner with 281 votes, followed by Margaret Barao (244) and Joshua McMahon (202). McMahon formally requested the recount.

MacRae, a School Committee incumbent, tallied 680 votes. Quintal, meanwhile, had previously been sworn into office and attended her first board meeting last week.

“Mr. McMahon picked up two votes,” Johnson said.

The votes were inspected, with particular attention paid to ballots in which write-in stickers might have been, inadvertently or not, placed over the oval that had to be darkened for the vote to count.

There were seven challenges by McMahon’s observers that were handled by the town Board of Registrars.
