April Fools highlights: Dunkin's name change, Cambridge invading Boston

By Mike Deehan,

Some local businesses and at least one politician tried to get a rise out of Bostonians for April Fools' Day.

  • Here are some highlights:

Cambridge to annex Boston

A Cambridge city councilor wants the nerds across the river to take over the state capitol and create " MegaCambridge ."

What they're saying: "In 1630 Cambridge was chosen to be capital. That was until Boston took that from us. It's time to fix that. Let's annex Boston," the ad says.

Why it matters: Second-term Cambridge city councilor Burhan Azeem told the Globe he wants the joke to make a point about regional collaboration and how the area's biggest municipalities need to work together.

  • Public infrastructure, housing and the MBTA are just a few examples where Azeem sees more potential for cooperation.

💭 Deehan's thought bubble: This is the exact reason we keep those cannons on the Esplanade and fire warning shots toward Cambridge every July 4.

Just DONUTS'

The coffee chain Dunkin' joked they're going to re-embrace the doughnut branding that made them famous and change the company's name one more time.

What they're saying: "ANNOUNCEMENT: we're changing our name. again. now we're just DONUTS'," the chain posted on Instagram .

  • "we will have coffee still. pls don't ask any other questions. Just going thru it rn"

There's no word yet on the chain's mental breakdown or why the name is possessive.

Say 'I do" to savings

Market Basket teased that the grocery chain would soon let you use the wildly popular stores as wedding venues.

  • "Walk down the aisle in your favorite aisle. You'll exchange vows with your loved one in an intimate ceremony, then guests will enjoy a Market's Kitchen dinner and Bakery cake at the reception," Market Basket posted to X.

What they're saying: "This may be an April Fools' joke. But I did immediately start thinking which aisle would be the best," one MB customer told Boston25.

  • "For me, it would have to be the coffee and cereal aisle. Great smell, and get to walk down the aisle to some characters I grew up with," they said.
