South Main Street guided history walk returns this month
After two years’ absence, the Verona Area Historical Society (VAHS) will bring back its guided history walk down South Main Street this month. “South Main Street echoes with the voices of Verona generations past,” the event description states. “Soldiers and pastors, doctors and teachers, immigrants and founding families – they all left their fingerprints on our town… and on this street.”
College sports: Five Verona student-athletes sign National Letters of Intent
Five student-athletes signed National Letters of Intent on Jan. 16 to continue athletic careers at the collegiate level. The five athletes who signed are Nathan Kirwan, who will play volleyball at Aurora University; Harriet Salas, who will play softball at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville; Bryson Kundinger, who will wrestle at UW-Eau Claire. Two baseball players – Jack DeTienne and Owen Davis also signed. DeTienne signed to play baseball at Xavier University and Davis signed to play baseball at Edgewood College.
Marquardt named next principal of Glacier Edge Elementary
Laura Marquardt, the current associate principal at Sugar Creek Elementary School, has been selected to serve as Glacier Edge Elementary School’s next principal. According to a Verona Area School District (VASD) news release, Marquardt will assume her new role on July 1. She brings with her 17 years of experience in education, having served as an elementary school classroom teacher, a dean of students and an associate principal at Sugar Creek.

Supervisor Lonsdorf to speak at senior center
Town of Verona Board of Supervisors member David Lonsdorf is set to speak during an environmental forum at the Verona Senior Center from 6:30-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 21. During the event, Lonsdorf will share ways people can live more sustainably and advocate for more action in the community. He was elected as second supervisor to the Town Board in 2021.
Utilities start work on power line crossing in Mississippi River wildlife refuge
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Utility companies have started construction on a contentious power line crossing in a Mississippi River wildlife refuge. ITC Midwest and Dairyland Power Cooperative are looking to string the final mile of the Cardinal-Hickory Creek transmission line across the Upper Mississippi River National Wildlife and Fish Refuge near Cassville, Wisconsin. When finished, the 102-mile line will link Iowa’s Dubuqe County and Wisconsin’s Dane County. Conservationists sued in March to block the refuge crossing, but a federal appellate court cleared the way for construction on May 7. The utilities said in a joint statement that preliminary construction work began Monday with tower footings slated to be poured the week of May 27.
