Monroe County FFA students explore high tech potato farming
HOWE, IN — Monroe County high school students traveling to this week's National FFA Convention in Indianapolis stopped Tuesday, Oct. 20, at two agricultural businesses in Ohio and Indiana to see the industry in action. Whiteford Agricultural School FFA Advisor/Instructor Jake Gust accompanied 60 FFA students from Whiteford, Dundee, Blissfield, and Sand Creek. The group visited Rupp Seed in Wauseon, Ohio, and Lennard Agriculture in Howe, Indiana, to explore agricultural careers and opportunities. Gust said the goal was to expose students to agricultural careers. Gust noted many students were familiar with corn, soybeans, and wheat, while the visits offered a chance to learn about other aspects of the industry, including specialty crops. Rupp produces crop seeds. Lennard is Michigan's second-largest potato grower. Students toured the expansive Lennard facilities just off the I-80/90 Toll Road south of Sturgis. “This was a great opportunity for our students to learn about the potato industry. There were many exciting experiences today,” Gust said. Kyle Lennard and his wife Stefani, both Monroe County natives, are third-generation owners of a family business founded in 1947 by his grandfather on five acres in Monroe County. The company now owns about 9,000 acres of potatoes across eight locations

The secret to success at two-decade-old Howell Western Wear
HOWELL — Lynn Elberson's faith drove her to open Howell Western Wear in 2006. Two decades later, that same faith has helped guide her toward continued success in downtown Howell. Elberson opened her store at 121 N. Michigan Ave. (Suite A) during the Howell Melon Festival of 2006. She was driven by an entrepreneurial spirit and passion for horses. “God calls us to do certain things, but sometimes when we start our lives, we don’t do that," Elberson told The Daily. "We (go) along the path of what just happens to us, and I always knew there was another path for me." Howell Western Wear carries boots, hats, clothing, belts and other items for men, women and children. The store's featured brands include Anderson Bean, Tecovas, Ariat, Wrangler and Thorogood. Over the years, the shop has expanded into neighboring storefronts and renovated the building's basement to include even more retail. Customers can benefit from custom boot fittings and two hat bars with master hat shapers. It hasn't always been easy, weathering the Great Recession and COVID-19, according to Elberson. “You get stronger and you find ways and you get better,” she said. “I think the difficult times make us better
