Suspect dies from self-inflicted gunshot wound following police pursuit in Birmingham

HOMEWOOD, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A man died a day after allegedly shooting himself in the course of a police pursuit in Birmingham earlier this week, the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office reports.

Antonio Dewayne Davidson, 35, reportedly shot himself while fleeing Homewood police in his car at the corner of 6th Avenue and 8th Street South in Birmingham at 2:06 p.m. Monday. At 11:10 a.m. Tuesday, Davidson was pronounced dead at UAB Hospital.

Sgt. John Carr of the Homewood Police Department said that officers tried to pull over Davidson’s car due to surveillance that was done on it. From there, the pursuit began along Green Springs Highway and led into downtown Birmingham.

The HPD is investigating the case.
