BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Birmingham-Southern College alumni came to campus Saturday to support its baseball team. For some, it may be the final time they are on a campus they call home.

Dale Dobbs, a 1986 BSC graduate, is sad and disappointed the school is closing. Dobbs meet his wife at the college, and his son also graduated from BSC.

He says said family atmosphere is why alumni always want to return.

“There are business leaders, doctors, dentist and lawyers, and as result of that, the emotion that goes along with that to know you’re not going to have that any longer,” Dobbs said. “It’s hard to understand how as a state that you can let that go away.”

Will Latis, a 2023 graduate and former baseball player at BSC, said he will remember the bond he made with friends while at the college. He wants another college to take residence on the campus.

“I don’t know what else you can do with this place,” Latis said. “It’s definitely made for a school. I just hope another school comes here and have a good time, play some baseball and use it how it’s supposed to be used.”

BSC junior Nick Anglin is saying goodbye and transferring to Samford University, but he said he will still represent BSC.

“Oh, I’m getting a jersey,” Anglin said. “I can promise you that. One day: full outfit. That’s what I’m going to wear to one of these games.”

The school will close May 31.
