1 dead in Birmingham shooting identified, person of interest detained

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Birmingham Police Department is investigating a homicide on the west side of city limits Thursday evening.

The investigation is underway in the 900 block of 58th Street Ensley, BPD reports.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald with BPD stated at around 4:20 p.m., west precinct officers received a Shot Spotter alert in the 5700 block of Court I.

The report was soon updated when an adult male was found lying unresponsive in the front yard of a residence in the 900 block of 58th Street Ensley. The male was pronounced dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service.

He was later identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office as Anthony Lambert Jr., 21, of Birmingham.

Additionally, Truman said a person of interest has turned himself over to police custody in connection to the case. Detectives will interview him and turn over information to the district attorney’s office.

Truman states the preliminary investigation revealed Lambert was involved in an argument in the Court I area and was shot by one or more suspects, who fled the scene.
