Some proud parents gathered at the C. Henry Price II, American Legion Post 246 in Betterton on April 19, to warmly congratulate their children during the Americanism Essay Award Reception.

The contest was open to third, fourth, and fifth graders of Galena Elementary.

President of the Auxiliary at the Legion, Patti Bone, handed out cash awards to the winners of the essay contest. First place got $50, second $25, and third $10.

Betterton mayor, Donald Sutton was in attendance, shaking the hands of the winners and interacting with the parents.

The students talked about what freedom meant for them.

First place winner Chace Foye wrote freedom is “walking down the street without harassment.”

Second place winner, Athena Stone was thankful for freedoms we may take for granted, like food, shelter and friends.

Third place winner Carter Carroll echoed Foye’s statements and also mentioned freedom of speech was a benchmark to our country.

Bone said, “I would like to thank everyone for coming out to help recognize the essay winners. The Auxiliary is glad that Americanism is still part of all our lives, and that Galena Elementary helps to keep that going in the school system.”
