3 inmates die at Donaldson Correctional Facility in 3 days

BESSEMER, Ala. ( WIAT ) — Three inmates at William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility died in separate incidents over the weekend.

According to the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office, 36-year-old Hudson Dontavious Swanson was found unresponsive at the prison around 3:50 p.m. on Friday. Swanson was declared dead less than 20 minutes later. The coroner said no evidence of trauma or foul play were present. Swanson was serving a sentence following a 2007 conviction on robbery and sex abuse charges out of Montgomery County.

The following day, 39-year-old Deandre Roney was stabbed at the prison around 12:53 p.m. Roney was taken to UAB Hospital for treatment where he later died from his injuries. His death is being investigated as homicide by the Alabama Department of Corrections. Roney was serving a sentence following a 2008 conviction on robbery and attempted murder charges out of Jefferson County.

On Sunday, 59-year-old Walter Maul was found dead in the prison infirmary where he was being treated for “a significant natural disease.” A postmortem exam showed no evidence of trauma or foul play in Maul’s death. He was serving a life sentence following a 1981 conviction on a first degree rape charge out of Jefferson County.
