Retired Bertie County teacher and Band Director Marsha Smithwick was honored Monday when the Bertie County Commissioners passed a resolution highlighting her accomplishments throughout her stellar career. After striking up the band and simultaneously teaching on the elementary, middle and high school levels for 30 years, Smithwick retired in 1999. “This resolution is in honor of the service of Marsha Smithwick,” said Bertie County Commission Chair John Trent. ...
Carawan named to lead Bertie Co. Finance
After months without a Bertie County Finance Director, Willie Carawan took over the reins of county finances on May 1. Carawan was formerly the Chief Financial Officer for Beaufort County Schools and was introduced during Monday’s Bertie County Commissioner’s meeting. “It is a pleasure to have Willie Carawan Jr. join Bertie County Government, as our new Director of Finance,” said Bertie County HR Director Latoria Harrell. “Willie Carawan Jr. retired...
Audit report contains mostly good news
This is the first year Bertie County has engaged the accounting firm of Mauldin and Jenkins to perform the county’s annual audit. The firm’s Audit Director, LeAnn Bagasala, presented the financial findings to the Bertie County Commissioners at the board meeting last Monday. “This is our first year as your external auditor, so the presentation probably will look a little bit different for you. I’ll go over all of your...
Charles Barkley is one of the best - again
I wrote last week about a newer YouTube channel I was watching and wanted to tell you about. When you love sports like I do, sometimes you watch people play and sometimes, you simply listen to people talk about what they think when they watch other people play. For years, the majority of the sports media consumed was created and distributed by journalists. That made sense because until the last few decades, the majority of sports media was written, printed and then read. ...
Cooper is highly regarded
During the fall and winter of 1777-1778, the British military brought the Continental Army to its knees. In September 1777, British army commander General William Howe triumphed over General Washington at the Battle of Brandywine. With over 1,000 patriot losses, they retreated. This situation allowed the British to occupy Philadelphia. A month later, on Oct. 4, 1777, General Washington and Howe faced off again at Germantown, Pennsylvania. The patriots became disoriented in a thick fog, leading to substantial friendly fire injuries and deaths. This dire...

Teen is one of Hertford's newest full-time entrepreneurs
Dayne Colson is one of Hertford’s newest entrepreneurs. That’s hardly a rare distinction with the town on the commercial upswing, but Colson, an advertising specialty manufacturer and a new investor in commercial real estate, just graduated from high school. He is only 18 years old. Colson runs Dayne’s Designs out of the old Country Corner Cafe Building at the intersection of Cypress Stretch Lane and Grub Street. He just took...
The awe of God: how to approach the Heavenly Father
Therefore let us be grateful for receiving a kingdom that cannot be shaken, and thus let us offer to God acceptable worship, with reverence and awe, for our God is a consuming fire. - Hebrews 12:28 People often speak of God as though He is just another person. Words that seem to desire to bring Him down to our level. They seem to want a God who is like a...
Students protest removal of BHS football coach
While college campuses across the country are filled with protesting students, Bertie County is not out of the fray. First-year Bertie High School football coach Darrius Wesson has been terminated from his coaching position. The move proved to be the catalyst for the disruption at Bertie High School on Tuesday framed by school officials as a “protest.” A video posted on social media pictures the halls being filled with students...
Rejoice in the fact Jesus is the Way
The term Christian was a pejorative term that the enemies of Christ coined for His followers. According to Acts 11:26, the followers of Christ were first called Christians at Antioch. Originally, believers were called the “People of the Way” because Jesus said He was The Way. In John chapter 14, Jesus declares He is The Way to God. This statement leaves His followers with several questions. ...

For the best protection while doing yard work, try snow-mowing
Springtime mowing has always been troublesome for me. Between hay fever and sensitive skin, I really have no business going out to cut grass between early April and mid-June. When I was a teenager and responsible for the mowing at our house, I sometimes had to weigh the misery of an uncontrollable sneezing fit against the sweaty and mundane work of which my seasonal allergies could potentially relieve me. “Sorry,...

Effective May 1, Dr. Tabitha Miller has commenced her official duties and responsibilities as the tenth President of Martin Community College (MCC). Dr. Miller expresses pride in MCC as a standout educational institution. “Martin Community College is one of the educational jewels in eastern North Carolina,” she said. “We are the only college out of the 58 community colleges with an Equine program. Other programs offered that make us unique...
Moores Creek National Battlefield marks important American history
Nestled just 24 short miles from one of the most beautiful cities in America is a quaint national battlefield whose history may have turned the tide in the quest for independence. Moores Creek National Battlefield is located at 40 Patriots Hall Dr. in Currie and is the home of the first decisive win for the Patriots during the American Revolution. The site is a reminder of the battle that took...
Social Media posts appear to show walkout at BHS
Details are scarce, but multiple social media posts have shown students at Bertie High School apparently participating in a walk out. The posts say the incident centers around the school system’s alleged dismissal of BHS football coach Darius Wesson and, possibly basketball coach Johnnie Rascoe. Both coaches have said on social media they were removed from their positions with the school. Social media posts reviewed by the Bertie Ledger-Advance show students in the hallways of the school with posters. There is also a strong police presence at the school. Bertie Ledger-Advance reporter John Foley is on the way to the scene and will have more information.
Spring palette dishes add vibrancy and flavor
I love the colors and flavors of spring. The variations of flowering hues and the bright chartreuse leaves of trees inspire me to create dishes in a spring palette. Beautiful spring vegetables such as asparagus, artichokes and peas add such fresh vibrancy and flavor to a meal. And with undertones of cool evenings still lingering a nice spring vegetable soup makes a wonderful beginning to dinner or a main course at lunch with a little crusty bread and a salad. ...
Holden Thorp shares his diagnosis and more
Holden Thorp, former chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and one of the smartest people I have ever known, made a startling announcement last week. In the April 28 edition of “Science,” the magazine he edits, he wrote: “I am autistic. I have had had my diagnosis for several years but have only come to the conclusion to be public about it over the last year.” ...
Let Eisner make the choice
It’s bewildering to me how anyone in Martin County can expect a resolution to Martin General Hospital’s dilemma while the county commissioners cannot fulfill their responsibilities and decide on a county manager. Professional providers of any stature would be amiss to commit to a longterm situation not knowing who is in charge of the day-to-day operations of the government. Would you bet the farm on a company without a CEO?...
