Shreveport native appointed by Gov. Landry to run Louisiana Community Technical College System
BATON ROUGE, La. (KSLA) - A Shreveport native has been appointed by Governor Jeff Landry to oversee the Louisiana Community Technical College System (LCTCS). On Monday, June 10, Gov. Landry appointed Timothy Hardy to serve as chairman of LCTCS, which represents 12 community colleges across the state, serves more than 150,000 students, and graduates more than 30,000 students each year.
Shreveport’s David Dennis was architect of Freedom Summer of 1964
SHREVEPORT, La. (KTAL/KMSS) – A Shreveport native and civil rights activist was the architect of Freedom Summer in 1964. David Dennis, Sr. began his journey of civil rights activism while studying at Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana’s oldest HBCU. His early involvement with the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) led him to join Freedom Riders in the American South during the spring of 1961. He later took on leadership roles in CORE’s voting registration efforts in Mississippi and served as the assistant program director of the Council of Federated Organizations. This umbrella organization brought CORE, SNCC, SCLC, and the NAACP together.
